The Purple Feathered Mini Skirt

So, we are running late for dinner reservations, and when I say “we” I mean ME. I was supposed to have been ready 15 minutes ago but of course per the usual “I don’t have anything to wear.” Standing in my closet, I stare blankly at rows of clothes that seemed like a good idea at the time of purchase but have since, never worn.

C’mon – don’t act like you don’t know what I’m talking about.

Take for example, the Purple Feathered Mini-Skirt. Yes, I’m serious. I mean it looked so hip on the model I had to have it – but where in the hell am I supposed to wear this thing? And what top? What shoes?

Am I going to look like a Little Purple Bird??? Will I get attacked Alfred Hitchcock style by a flock of angry pigeons on my way to the car? These are the sorts of things that keep me up at night. I have to find a hobby.

Black Denim – The friend that always delivers!

Finally, like a perfectly chilled glass of champagne in the middle of a hot dirty dessert – my eyes rest upon my favorite wardrobe staple: Black High-rise Flared Jeans.   If you don’t yet have at least one pair of dark black jeans in your closet – you need!  Black jeans are one of the most versatile pieces in your closet.

You can easily dress them up, way down or casual chic.  Wear to work for casual Friday then seamlessly meet friends for drinks with a quick top change. Black jeans act as a blank canvas on which you can create a ton of vastly different looks, depending on your mood and the occasion – and always look amazing!  Best of all – no one really notices if you wear them a lot πŸ˜‰

The Best Style for Your Body

Personally, I love and gravitate to High-Rise Flares. That’s my Go-To and what’s most flattering on my body type. When looking for a good black jean – select the style that works best on your body type regardless of trends.

If you read the piece on Best Jeans for Your Body, then you already know if you’re an Hourglass, Apple, Pear or Straight. Ok – truth: I’m sort like Reese Witherspoon in “Election”…. hashtag 90’s movies. Meaning, I pretty much have to be all-extra about everything I do. I cannot leave well-enough alone. Somebody please help me. Seriously.

Anyhoo – with that in mind, I’ve also selected black denim options for each body-type in case you need a fresh new pair ;-). Yes. I’m an Enabler.

BLACK DENIM, 3-WAYS

Why it works

Easy and so simple to wear, I call this the Audrey because it totally reminds me of Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany’s!! Right!? Black denim forms a long sleek line when paired with a cozy cable-knit sweater. Ankle length denim gives the eye a visual break before resting on a chic little pair of animal print, flat mules. It’s the unexpected that catapults a black outfit from boring and typical – to chic and stylish without looking too forced.

LOVING this small hands-free, cross-body bucket bag. Anytime I can go hands-free, I’m IN! Finish the look with a great pair of cat-eye sunglasses for a super stylish but easy look.

Why it works

This laid-back vibe pretty much encapsulates how we like to roll in SoCal. Strategically ripped at the knees black denim says “I’m relaxing today” without looking like a total surf-rat. Paired with a cozy fleece pullover with a relaxed neckline, comfortable sneakers and a hands-free belt bag and you’re ready for the day! Orgasm by NARS – I love because it gives the perfect amount of glow-y, flushed color for a healthy, sporty look.

Why it works

My beloved high-rise flares are fitted through the hips and thighs, which balances this slightly oversized amazing soft & slouchy off-shoulder sweater. SO damn cozy! Keeping the boot the same color as the pant adds length to our legs because the eye sees one continuous long line. We like! I’m also loving this Victorian-style lace up high heeled boot – it adds just a little bit of naughty. You supply the rest πŸ˜‰

Consider mixing it up a little with a bag that compliments the rest of the outfit but doesn’t “match”. A friend of mine in the fashion industry used to say stay away from “Match-y Watchy.” That’s a bit overboard, but you get my drift. This relaxed hobo in Bordeaux is a really great neutral. It’s just as neutral as black. Wear with navy, grey, taupe, beige, black, hunter green – anything. Also would look amazing with those animal print mules. Ugh. Where’s my AmEx? Anyone….anyone?

Black jeans are like potato chips…..you can’t have just one! I swear I have like 20 pairs. This is embarrassing. Now you don’t have to be THAT bat-shit crazy – but as a general rule, you want at least 2 pairs: One to wear with flats + one to wear with heels. Options ladies! We need options! Happy shopping πŸ˜‰
