Sugar is Like ‘Single White Female’

Super Fun Until She Starts Stalking Your Ass

SUGAR is a sneaky, equal opportunity little bastard.  It doesn’t matter Who you are, What you do or Who’s yo daddy – it’s negative effects; Addiction, Obesity, Illness, Lethargy, Mood swings don’t discriminate.  Sugar is like Jennifer Jason Leigh in Single White Female.  A super fun BFF until she goes Koo-Koo for Cocoa Puffs, starts stalking your ass and Just….Won’t……Leave.

And yes, I just referenced a 90’s movie.  Some of you may have to google it.

We willingly poison our bodies

The problem is that sugar tastes delicious.  It just does, and because it tastes delicious – we are willing to poison our bodies in exchange for a few minutes of bliss.  Let that one digest….  We are willing to poison our bodies by ingesting a toxic substance (sugar)….in order to enjoy a few minutes of pleasure.

Because sugar tastes so delicious, we have been

willing to poison our bodies with this toxic substance

in exchange for a few minutes of pleasure. It’s crazy!!

Once you know – you’ll never look at a cupcake the same way again

Once I really started delving into the extraordinary harm sugar does to our body and our mind at every level, I’ve never been able to look at it the same way again.  Pretty pink cupcakes, chic little macarons, a box of Sees chocolates used to excite and feel like fun!  Like something special.  Now, I just see sickness, obesity, depression and toxicity in a pretty little Trojan Horse. Happily, this makes it much easier to walk away – and my hope is that understanding more will have the same effect on you.

So how do you know if you’re eating too much sugar?  Here are SEVEN SIGNS your body gives you that says “Step Away From the Sugar Bar!”

This is the only kinda Shug-ah you should be having….. 😉 Wink.

7 Signs You’re Eating Too Much Sugar

1. It’s Hard For You to Lose Weight

Here’s the Big Dirty Secret:  For years, the entire marketplace has been holding up FAT as the bright shiny object to fear, when all this time it’s the sugar that has been the real culprit.

Here’s the deal:  Sugar is void of any nutritional value whatsoever.  This means you are eating airy, empty calories and not feeling full, then reaching for more food in an effort to feel sated.  This results in eating even more calories.

Adding insult to injury – Sugar is extremely addicting making us crave it more and more, eating when we aren’t hungry.  It’s a vicious cycle.  But it’s not only the additional calories we’re eating – it’s the INSULIN SURGE that sugar causes in our bodies – that promotes weight gain.   Read more on this….

2. You’re a Total Debbie Downer

Feeling down and  blues-y?  Here’s the thing: When we eat a high-sugar diet, it raises the inflammation levels in our body – which has been linked to higher risks of depression and other mood disorders.  Additionally, a number of studies have identified a link between eating too much sugar and an increased risk for mood disorders, including depression.

3. You’re Jonesing for Salty Foods

Sugar addiction isn’t just limited to those of us with a “sweet tooth!”  If you’re totally jonesing for salty foods like potato chips, pretzels, and breads – you may actually be craving sugar.  Why?  Because people with sugar addiction are usually deficient in key nutrients and aren’t getting enough of the healthy proteins and fats that our body needs.  It’s the body’s way of saying “Back off the sugar – let’s eat something clean and nutritious!”

4. You’re Jonesing for Sugary Foods

The thing is, the more sugar we eat – the more we crave it…. Wait, “crave” isn’t the right word because it’s so much more than that. It’s like we NEED it.  We need that sugar fix like there’s no tomorrow and willpower isn’t the issue.  It is like an actual drug addiction.

A diet high in sugar causes a hormonal response in your body which is a vicious cycle of sugar high, followed by a sugar crash which then triggers our bodies to want more sugar.  It’s a vicious cycle that can be difficult to break, but if you want to do it – you can!

5. You Feel Like a Sloth on Sleeping Pills

Translation, you feel lethargic and zapped of energy. Eating sugar laden foods causes a surge in our blood sugar and insulin levels, leading to that initial spike in our energy (sugar rush!), inevitably followed by the dreaded sugar crash which leaves us feeling like a sloth on sleeping pills, just dragging through the day.  Eating a lot of sugar also means you’re probably not eating enough protein and fiber, which are important nutrients for sustaining energy throughout the day.

6. Your Skin Quality Sucks

Sugar is one of the worst things you can do for your skin.  Straight up.  It accelerates the aging process like nobody’s business, breaks down collagen and elastin making skin thinner and more wrinkly, leaves skin dehydrated, inflamed, with dark undereye circles, discoloration and dull, lackluster appearance.  It doesn’t do one darn positive thing for you.

7. You feel like PMS Hell-in-Heels

Ever felt like PMS Hell in Heels after stuffing yourself with birthday cake?  You know what I mean – super crabby, annoyed and irritable – with a raging headache.  I totally have.  The sugar crash that inevitably follows the sugar high, is what causes these types of mood swings and makes us feel like crapola.

How to fix a sugar-crash

If you DO find yourself in a crabby, headache inducing sugar crash, you want to stabilize your blood sugar.  During a sugar crash, your body is looking for a protein source to balance out your blood glucose levels. So make sure to eat some good, clean protein as soon as possible. Think chicken breast, a handful of almonds, tunafish, hard-boiled eggs, cottage cheese, Plain Greek Yogurt, fresh fish.
