Highly Happy People do 10 Key Things that others don’t. Learn their 10 Habits!

Getting-To-Your-Happy

Happiness.  How do you define it and what does it look like to you? Inevitably, the way in which we define our own happiness may differ – but in the final analysis, we all want the same thing:  To be happy.

I have always believed that we are each born with a predisposition to see the glass as either half-full, or half-empty.  Some people are born optimists, while others are born pessimists.  This is in no way a judgement nor a critique of anyone – just an observation of our species.  Are you naturally inclined to see the glass as half-empty or half-full?  Regardless of which camp you fall into, your fate is not sealed.

I mean – unless they’re smoking something that’s legal in California – optimists aren’t always happy and automatically slated for eternal happinessand pessimists are not doomed to be unhappy Debby Downer’s for life.  The point is, getting-to-the-happy simply comes a little easier for optimists and requires a little more work for the pessimists. That’s all.

Happiness is a Learned Skill!

Sh*t happens to everyone.  Happy people handle it differently.

The good news is that happiness is both a choice and a learned skill.  Happy people have to work at it.  It doesn’t “just happen” and stay on auto-pilot for their life’s duration.  It takes work, learning and a commitment to growth.  Happy people aren’t happy because everything miraculously goes their way and they were somehow blessed with a perfect life.

I mean, sh*t happens to everyone, right?  No one is immune from life’s hard knocks: Heartbreak, betrayal, disappointment, rejection, sorrow – we’re all equal candidates.  That’s part of why we are on this earth, right?  To face certain difficulties and in doing so – learn, grow and evolve into better, stronger beings.  The primary difference between happy people and the rest lies in the way they view and respond when crappy things happen.

10 Habits of Happy People:

#1 They Practice Daily Gratitude

Practicing daily Gratitude is one of the most important, life-changing things you can do for yourself.  The practice of expressing gratitude determines the direction and trajectory of your life.  It dissolves negative emotions and completely lifts your spirits, strengthening life satisfaction.  It releases positive energy into the Universe, which is then reflected back to you. Start and end each day by writing down 3 things for which you are grateful.  Be consciously aware of how it makes you feel….light, positive, hopeful.

#2 They Consciously Work at Being Happy

Look, crappy things happen to everyone and happy people are no exception.  Seriously, no one wakes up feeling happy every fricking day of the year, but happy people just work at it harder than others.  They know how easy it is to get sucked into a negative-vortex of emotions when things don’t go as planned, and they consciously refocus their mindset with their happiness in mind.

When something sh*tty happens they may have a 5-minute pity party, they’re human after all, but they’ll quickly switch gears to focus on the positive, asking themselves “what did I learn and how can I use the lesson to propel myself forward?”

Unhappy people get sucked into the “It’s not Fair” Vortex

Unhappy people get sucked into the vortex of “It’s not fair, Someone screwed me over, This sucks, Crappy things always happen to me….”  And guess what?  More crappy things happen, because our thoughts and beliefs form our reality and the life we end up living.  It’s a cycle, but it’s a cycle that can be broken if you choose.

Pessimism fuels unhappiness and damages your spirit. Step Right instead of Left, meaning force yourself to look at what positive things may come out of the experience. Understand that it’s a temporary set-back in order to learn a positive lesson.

#3 They Have a Healthy View of Money & Material Goods

It’s not about The Stuff.  It really isn’t.

Does it seem like everyone’s chasing the BBD, the Bigger-Better-Deal?   More money, better cars, bigger houses….just more stuff.  Here’s the thing – it’s not the actual car or house that you want…..it’s the way you think it will make you feel– that you’re after.

Happy people know that material wealth is nice to a point, but it’s only a small part of life’s equation. They have a healthy perspective about how much joy material possessions bring.  Happiness starts with liking who you are, stripped naked in front of the mirror without title, bank account, makeup or fancy clothes – just YOU, the human being.  The material things are just nice little extras, and there’s nothing wrong with that.  Just keep it in perspective.

Think of it this way

If happiness and money were directly related, such that your happiness rose in direct correlation to every dollar added to your net worth, then by definition every wealthy person would be ridiculously happy and we know that’s not true, right?  Conversely, everyone who struggles financially would be unhappy – and we know that’s not true either, right?

So, it’s not about the stuff.  It really isn’t.  If you think, “When (this) happens, I’ll be happy….”  Stop.  You’re looking the wrong way.  Stuff doesn’t make you happy….you make you, happy.  Happy people understand this.  That’s why they don’t care about keeping up with the Joneses.

#4 They surround themselves with other happy people

“You are the average of the five people with whom you spend the most time.” — Jim Rohn

Attitudes are contagious.  Happy people know that surrounding oneself with negative people affects mindset, mood, spirit, energy and even your life’s trajectory.  So, they simply choose to surround themselves with other happy people. Happy people act like happy people. They smile, engage and bring positive energy and enthusiasm to the table.  They live by the aphorism, “you are the average of the 5 people with whom you spend the most time”….  This is so important! Read more about it here.

Happy people know the debilitating effect negative people will have on those around them. They choose to surround themselves with OTHER happy people.

#5 They don’t compare themselves to others

Marsha! Marsha! Marsha!

Comparing yourself to others is a vicious cycle that you’ll never win.  Allowing external forces to control and dictate the way you feel about yourself is a never-ending roller coaster and it’s exhausting.

Happy people understand that everyone has their own unique life-path to forge, complete with their own set of challenges.  Your path may look very different than someone else’s, but it isn’t inherently better or worse.  Just different.  Human beings are the ones who place arbitrary value and judgement on one another’s choices and paths.  That arbitrary value-system doesn’t make it so.

Happy people resist comparing their lives to others.  Instead, they focus on feeling happy and secure in their own skin and truly liking themselves and who they are as a human beings – faults and all.

#6 They Take Care of Themselves

Self-care is an expression of liking yourself, plain and simple.  Happy people have a high self-worth and they take time for themselves. Whether that means carving out time each day to workout, get your hair done, eat clean healthy foods or just take regular “me time” to regroup…..they do it.

Unhappiness and stress take a serious toll on your body, often manifesting itself in the form of wrinkles, weight gain and health issues.  Sleep, exercise, proper diet and taking “me time” is crucial to overall happiness.  If you feel sleep deprived, sluggish, unhealthy and overwhelmed then your mental, emotional and spiritual energy will all be negatively affected.  Take care of YOU!  You are deserving just because you are YOU.

#7 They Slow Their Roll & Appreciate

It’s alarmingly easy to get so caught up in our routine and fast-paced lives, that we fly by the little joys in life without giving them a second thought.  We’ve all done it!  Happy people consciously slow their roll and take time to enjoy-the-joy.

It’s the little things that can honestly bring about the greatest sense of gratitude, peace and happiness.  In the middle of writing this Post, I went outside to have lunch with Oliver.  It’s a beautiful, sunny Sunday and he had grilled us swordfish with zucchini and put on my favorite playlist.

The dogs were sleeping by our feet and we were talking, looking forward to the Tahoe trip we were taking the next day. In that moment, I slowed my roll and just appreciated the moment.  Appreciating the little things if life, adds cumulative pebbles of happiness to your life!

#8 They Don’t Gossip + They Aren’t Nasty to Others

Happy people aren’t interested in catty gossip, superficial relationships or passing judgement on others. They engage with people on a deeper level, creating relationships built on substance, emotional connections, meaningful interactions and a deeper understanding of others.  They will stand up for themselves, but then quickly disengage from negative situations and mean-spirited groups. Read more about Mean-Girls.

This dovetails with their practice of surrounding themselves with positive people and self-care.  They know that those who are negative and proactively unkind are unhappy.  Why? Because it is impossible to be both a happy person and needlessly nasty to others.  It can’t happen.  Their high self-worth repels them from negative people and situations.

Happy people engage with others on a deeper level creating emotional connections, vs. engaging in catty, mean-spirited gossip.

#9 Help Me, Help YOU!

They help others

Happy people take time to help others without expecting something in return.  Doing so not only makes someone else happy, but it makes YOU happy too!  When you do something nice for someone, don’t you just feel amazing?  Helping others gives you a surge of oxytocin, serotonin, and dopamine, all of which create good feelings.

Seeing someone else smile and say, “Omg thank you so much!” is one of the best feelings on earth.  Best of all, the good feelings generated are contagious and truth be told, this world needs all of the goodness it can absorb right now. Just sayin’.

#10 They Strive to Forgive

Forgiving is hard, especially when someone has really hurt or done you wrong.  The problem is, feeling hatred is toxic and poisonous to your body and your overall well-being.  Continuously thinking about how much you hate someone is like a slow leak of carbon monoxide – it silently kills.

Happy people know that forgiving someone doesn’t condone the act or mean that they are “ok” with what that person did or said.  Rather, the act of forgiveness, no matter how difficult, is giving themselves the gift of internal peace and happiness, void of toxicity and hatred.
